Audio January: Autonomous String Performing Instrument

Steve Kemper and friends from the UVa Music Department have developed a new robotic string instrument, about which he says: “Our current design contains picking, dampening, and string length changing mechanisms. The unprocessed acoustic sound of the string is captured by two contact microphones and amplified. We will present the mechanical and electrical design of our robot and present new compositions written for this instrument.”
