Empty Nest: A collaborative installation by Sebastijan Jemec and Jocelyn Spaar and…

Opening Reception Friday March 6, 6-8pm | Exhibition up through March 29, 2009

jemec.jpg

“Empty Nest” is a collaborative installation by Sebastijan Jemec and Jocelyn Spaar and others of projections and light and sound that explores the objectification and spatialization of memory and human presence. The presence of a person or the memory of a person gives physical and metaphysical significance to a space making it a place. Making it specific. People define spaces, and when the people leave, their memory and objects give presence. “Empty Nest” is a deconstruction and reconstruction of place and memory using photography, projection, and sound. It is somewhat site-specific and constantly being redefined and refined.

Beyond the Bars

Opening Reception January 2, 6-8pm | Exhibition up through January 31, 2009

lifeforce3.jpg

In January, we are pleased to present an exhibition of outsider art, featuring work in many media: charcoal drawings, watercolor, acrylic, decoupage, abstract art, oil, and ceramic pieces. These were created by inmates at Dillwyn and Buckingham Correctional Centers for Men, and Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women. The Show contains work from McGuffey Art Center Classes which are offered to inmates through the Programs Department at the Regional Jail. Local artists Rose Hill and Lindsay Michie-Eads have volunteered as the instructors participating in this outreach project to the local inmates. The show features work from Thomas Caudle, Toni Love, Marcus Sandidge, G. Batterby, Izzy Severich, Chuck Montague, G. Barker, Joseph Sigafoo, George Carroll, A. Harper, and William Weller.

Destroyed By Madness

Opening reception July 3, 6-8pm | Exhibition up through the end of July

joe-cpl.jpg

Born from poverty, from police citation, from literature and narcissism and inward analysis, fluctuating hate and love for Charlottesville and the world, a phenomena of over consumption and masochistic tendencies, confusion, and both
acceptance and the refusal to accept, described through a group photograph, paint, audio, and video exhibition curated by Riley Duncan. The exhibition seeks to find a medium, to find soul in the chaos and cacophony of our eclectic lives in this madness.

Everybody Shoot: Pictures from New Orleans and everywhere else

Opening reception Friday, December 5, 6-8pm | Exhibition up through December 20, 2008

smith_ballywho_large.jpg

Three photographers, local Aaron Farrington, Jenny Bagert, and Zack Smith, met in New Orleans in 2002. What they share is a sense for the dramatic, or the quirky. Between photos that seem to document the curiosities caught by the side of the road, and more dramatic, sharply staged photos is a sense of the somewhat bizarre that emerges in snatches. New Orleans courses through this exhibition, but don’t take that as a dividing characteristic. What shows is the light filtered through an umbrella, the thousand pinpricks of light constellating a festival, a girl’s stage-lit shoulders, and what is tattooed on the inside of a lip. It’s that familiar rule—that compelling things are hidden in plain sight—but peeled open and held up to the light.

Billy Hunt: A CLAW to Remember

Reception Friday, November 7, 6-9pm | Exhibition through November 29, 2008

claw.jpgWe are in the midst of a entertainment revolution. Radio, television, and newspapers have all seen significant declines in both revenues and consumers. All across the nation, traditional consumers of media have decided, “We want more interesting content, and maybe we should make it ourselves.”

The spectacle that is the Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers (CLAW) fits into this new paradigm. It is not a sports event, not community theater, and not a fundraiser. It is a sort of “wiki-theater” in which every amateur is also an author and every decision is made from the bottom up. CLAW is a spontaneously generated, self organized circus, made by amateurs for the benefit of our community.

The experience of CLAW is live, loud, and intoxicating. Billy’s images show that yes, CLAW is comprised of an eager band of weirdos; yes, CLAW is a freak show of the highest order; yes, CLAW is a Halloween cage match that goes all year long. But, in addition to these major selling points, CLAW is also something deeper: a fight song for a community of women with creative muscle to burn.

As the big entertainment companies continue to hole up in their bunkers of overpaid celebs, CGI, and stale, regurgitated content, women and men in Charlottesville have decided that we want a little more. If Big Media does not want to enrich our lives, we can do it ourselves. We make art by the people and for the people. Sony, NewsCorp, Viacom: you can stick with your reruns and reality shows. We don’t need you. Maybe we never did.

The reception will include a performance by Straight Punch to the Crotch, a screening of a CLAW film, and an arm-wrestling demonstration.

Hello There! an installation and sale by Allyson Mellberg and Jeremy Taylor

Public Preview – Friday, Aug. 29th 6-8pm | SALE – Saturday, Aug. 30th, 10am-5pm

hello_there.jpg

Allyson Mellberg and Jeremy Taylor are working artists and JMU professors who have been living in and around the Charlottesville area for the last four years. Allyson and Jeremy’s work can be found at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, Lump Gallery in Raleigh, NC, and Cerasoli Gallery in Los Angeles. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at museums and galleries including the Atlanta Contemporary Art Museum, The Rose Museum, SECCA, The Milwaukee Art Museum, The Bayly Art Museum, The Bemis Center, and Third Drawer Down in Victoria, Australia.

The installation and studio sale at the Bridge PAI will feature works on paper, paintings, sculptures, and soft sculptures made within the last five years. As Allyson and Jeremy move into a new (and empty!) studio this fall they are looking to find good homes for their work. All of the pieces will be priced far below their market value; a portion of the proceeds from this show will go to benefit The Bridge PAI. All of Jeremy and Allyson’s work is made using ecologically responsible, recycled, and non-toxic art materials.

Chill Out! Chill Out? I Will Not Chill Out!

October 3rd-28th, with an opening Reception October 3rd.

chill out - new

A Group Show curated by Colin L, featuring artists C.F., Sara Shapouri, Nick Kuszyk, Hillbilly Werewolf, dearraindrop, MOOSEJAW, Deya Ramsden, Shawn Thornton, John Fritz, Tom Hohmann, Sebastion Paulson, Heather Clark, John Erik Lawson, Meghan Eckman, and Thom Klepach.

Bursting from brilliant and battered art-addled brains, noise-damaged ears and hearts distended with love and hubris, this show will present a selection of contemporary art that promises to dazzle and disturb in a way that few art shows still do. The thread that connects these diverse artistic talents is Colin L, a musician/artist/ringleader of tormentors who some locals will remember as co-catalyst, with Usaisamonster bandmate and fellow artist Tom Hohmann, of Charlottesville’s legendary Pudhaus performance space. Colin’s energy and spirit once brought important wandering weirdos together for musical catharsis right here in Charlottesville, and this art show carries the seed of that spirit, gathering many artists whose lives intersected in that space back together for this important show.

The gallery will be crammed with art: video and ephemera that looks back at halcyon Pudhaus days in the small room, a survey of the present and future of brain melt from over 15 contemporary visual artists in the big room, as well as a merch table of prints, zines and music from the whole gang. The October 3rd opening party will also feature a lecture from Philly-based lord-of-flies Brandon Joyce and acoustic noise from Colin L. This will be so beautiful, it is scary.

Standard Operating Procedure: photos by Nubar Alexanian

From June 6-29 with Extended Gallery Hours during the Festival of the Photograph

Artist’s Talk at The Bridge on Friday, June 13th at 10am

nubar_alexanian_1.jpg

The Bridge PAI, in association with the Festival of the Photograph, is pleased to present Standard Operating Procedure, an exhibition of photographs by Nubar Alexanian.

The exhibition is the culmination of Alexanian’s ongoing collaboration with director Errol Morris, who he has worked with on the set of Morris’ films Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, Mr. Death, and the First Person series. In Standard Operating Procedure, Alexanian examines the notorious events at Abu Ghraib prison through the eyes of the American soldiers who participated in the abuses of power, and through actors who reenacted and dramatized the troubling events, which have since become indelibly written into our consciousness.
